Sr. Girls Basketball City Champs!

By Mr. Alm, Grade 10 Learning Leader:

What a contest!

A massive note of congratulations to the senior girls’ basketball team for their amazing win over Bowness on Friday evening!

They were down by 8 after the first quarter, and were able to turn it around in the second to reduce the deficit to only 28-30 at halftime.  There were 22 giveaways in the first half, which accounted for the score!  The girls came out a different team in the third quarter.  It was end to end stuff – trading baskets like in the Marrakech bazaar.  Finally, in the fourth quarter, the Comets turned on the full-court press to take an unassailable lead and finish deserved winners 61-54!

The girls had great fan support from students and staff, which created an atmosphere of great entertainment!

Congratulations to the players and excellent coaching team!

Provincial Wrestling Medalists!

A huge congratulations to the Comets wrestling team. We had four athletes compete in Edmonton at the ASAA Provincial Wrestling Championships. At our provincial championships we do not have junior/senior divisions. All wrestlers grades 10-12 compete against each other.

Liam, Sarah, Chase and Brandon wrestled with great heart and determination, leaving everything they had out on the mat. Their individual results are as follows:

Liam H. wrestled an amazing tournament, wrestling hard to secure himself a spot in the gold medal match. Unfortunately, he came up a bit short in the finals but walked away proud with a silver medal around his neck. Liam is a grade 10 wrestler and has won ALL of his matches this high school season except to this one rival.

Sarah H. did an amazing job grappling her way to secure a provincial bronze medal. Sarah wrestled with true grit an determination this weekend, this was by far her best performance all year and I am very excited to see her back on the team next year as she is also a grade 10 athlete.

As always Chase P. gave it his all. He is a grade 10 wrestler that has seen some awesome success this year on the mat. He won one, lost two in what was probably the toughest weight class this year. Throughout the season Chase has defeated a lot of the guys that placed ahead of him this weekend so he was able to walk away with his head held high knowing that next year, the podium will be his.

Brandon S. joined the wrestling team this year as a grade 12 rookie. This kid is awesome! hardworking, coachable and determined. I wish we could have another year to coach him on our team. Brandon gave it his all this weekend wrestling tough as usual but was unable to secure a win. His grit and determination did attract the attention of the U of A coach though, as soon as he found out that Brandon was in grade 12.

A massive thanks also goes out to Kara H. who travelled with our team as our trainer. She has been amazing all season and we were very thankful to have her with us.

Congratulations to coaches Hennick and Lakhani for an amazing season!

In 2013, Robert Thirsk established a relationship with Stovring Gymnasium in northern Denmark. In the spring of 2015 students from Robert Thirsk High School visited Denmark for an Interdisciplinary tour of Copenhagen and a home stay with Stovring students. This past week, for the third year in a row, a group of Danish students and their two teachers visited Calgary and Banff to stay with our students, experience our schools and visit historical and cultural sites within and outside the city. In October 2016, 20 students from Robert Thirsk and Western Canada will be visiting Denmark for our 2nd annual Interdisciplinary and Intercultural Excursion.

We are off to a great start to the school year welcoming nearly 1270 students to RTHS!   Thanks to our many leadership students who helped over the last three weeks with school set-up and tours.  Our new grade 10 Comets were welcomed on the first day with a pancake breakfast put on by our football team, followed by a hot dog lunch for all grades hosted by our girls’ soccer team.  At our welcoming assembly guest motivational speaker Ian Tyson reminded us about the importance of creating a welcoming and safe school environment as well as creating a safe and positive mindset at the beginning of the school year. We can’t wait to see the amazing things that our Comets will achieve this year!

On Thursday, November 10th the students and staff of RTHS gathered in two assemblies in honour of Remembrance Day. Fine Arts students paid tribute to those who served with a number of moving performances. The ceremonies began with a Colour Guard of RTHS cadets and staff member M. Pocock led by a piper. Memorable performances   followed by our band, vocal ensemble, vocal soloists, a harpist, Grade 10 dance students, and the RTHS Drama Society. During the performances a beautiful mural (see feature picture) was created by four art students.
