We are fortunate to have been able to welcome our colleagues and some amazing students from Finland, as a part of our participation in the FinAl project. Thirsk has partnered with Bowness High School and three high schools from Helsinki, Jyvaskyla, and Hameenlina to look at the question, “what makes a great school for all?” Dr. Christison and Ms. Gale are on their way to Finland to experience their schools as well, so that we can see all the amazing things we have in common, and what we can learn from each other!

The Choir and General Music students had a wonderful trip to the Studio Bell National Music Centre, where they engaged in rich learning about Canadian music. The students were able to participate in hands-on activities that took them through the centre and were privy to an exciting demonstration of a fully-operating classic movie theatre organ. The students were also able to play multiple instruments themselves, create vocal recordings, and learn about influential Canadian musicians of our time. A great day!

SLAM Team 2017 –RTHS Slam poets rocked their words this weekend – Shaelynn B., Shulamit P., Travis I., Kyra B., Skyler G. and Harley D. !!

They placed first in the first round ( knocking off last years champions ) and placed second in the second round. This placed them third overall and presented them a spot in the SLAM finals!! After four rounds with the final six teams – they placed a solid third overall just missing second by one point and first by two points – very tight. Their words were awesome and they represented RTHS with some poetic fury!!

The team this year was also nominated for Best Group Poem and Best Spirit of SLAM awards and Shaelynn B.WON the Best Individual Solo Poem for this years SLAM!! These kids were awesome!! Huge thanks to teacher coaches Mr. Lake and Ms. Connelly!

The Student Wellness Action Team (SWAT) prepared a unique campaign for the school to encourage positive relationships and promote wellness in support of  Canadian Mental Health Week.  Students were invited to write personal and encouraging notes to individuals in the building that have positively impacted them. Upon receiving a note students are encouraged to “Mail It Forward” by writing a note for someone else, continuing the cycle of encouragement throughout the week.

Congratulations to our Grade 10 students and teachers who showcased their Social Action Projects at a wonderful evening event on May  24th!  This year the students completed an incredible total of 812 volunteer hours and collected $13,028.60 for various organizations in response to their projects. We are blown away by the commitment of our kids.  Due to some grant money we’ve received in relation to this project, we hope to have a school tally in the near future highlighting the accomplishments of each year’s Grade 10 students and their impact on the local and global community.

A special thanks to all who helped our students execute their plans!

Congratulations to  over 420 Grade 12 students who crossed the stage at the RTHS graduation ceremony on May 31st.  Student MCs Catherine A. and Madiha R. welcomed the large crowd at the Corral and introduced CBE Trustee Joy Bowen-Eyre, who spoke on behalf of the Calgary Board of Education.  Student Dawson C. presented information about the Grade 12 class chosen charity, the Childhood Cancer Canada. As the first half of the graduating students crossed the stage they were congratulated by our very own Dr. Matt Christison and our namesake Dr. Robert Thirsk.  After a perfomance by our band and choir, student Matthew K. gave the Valedictory Address and we heard  from guest speaker Dr. Robert Thirsk.  Following the second half of the graduates crossing the stage Dr. Christison ended the ceremony with closing remarks.

Celebrations continued in the evening at our banquet with friends and family members at the BMO Centre, Stampede Park.  We are extremely proud of our Comets and wish them well in the future!

Students Have Unforgettable Summer Learning Experience

For six weeks this summer, nine CBE high school students had the opportunity to be part of the Heritage Youth Researcher Summer (HYRS) program at the University of Calgary. Students participated in state-of-the-art lab research. During the program, students meet and connect with members of the scientific community who offer invaluable insights on potential careers and future possibilities for students.

“The HYRS program provided me with a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience biomedical and health research first-hand. It was amazing to experience STEM career opportunities, while in high school,” says Srijal G., Grade 12 student at Robert Thirsk High School.

Student selection for the HYRS program is rigorous and competitive as students from public, separate, charter and private schools compete for 22 spots. Selected students worked in specialized scientific research laboratories, including the Noskov Laboratory where Srijal G. worked, for the duration of the program.

“My project was related to the treatment and diagnosis of thyroid cancer, specifically through a protein known as NIS,” says Srijal.
