Grade 10 students SOAR at presentation!

On October 7, 2015, the grade 10 Comets travelled to Cineplex Theatre to experience the documentary SOAR (Students that are Optimistic, Aware and Ready). This program was launched by Youth Leadership Camps Canada (YLCC) and is designed to provide new high school students with positive insight into their learning journey. This documentary shared knowledge from prominent Canadian speakers, as well as typical high school students. Through stories or guiding words, each one of us in attendance developed a stronger sense of confidence and open-mindedness as to the progression of our educational involvement. SOAR encouraged us to have a preeminent high school experience by being ourselves and becoming a part of the school community in different aspects, such as joining clubs. This film assisted each one of us in becoming a part of the Robert Thirsk community.

In October 2016, Grade 11 and 12 students have an opportunity to travel to Denmark for an Interdisciplinary Tour and Home stay. Along with Western Canada High School, Robert Thirsk has been involved in a partnership with Stovring Gymnasium, a secondary school in Northern Denmark. Their International Class have now visited Calgary three years in a row and in March of 2015, 30 students from RTHS and WCHS travelled to Denmark for the first time. The 10-day excursion consists of a 3-day Interdisciplinary Tour of Copenhagen and a 6 day home stay with Strovring Gymnasium students. Calgary students experienced a genuine intercultural experience resulting in close friendships and future travel possibilities. A fourth Danish contingency arrives in April 2016 and RTHS and WCHS would like to travel together for a second time in October 2016. Any Grade 10 and 11 students interested in this excursion should see Mrs. Muhlberger in Room 222 for details. You can also send an email to jamuhlberger@cbe.ab.ca.

We were thrilled to welcome Dr. Robert Thirsk to RTHS on Oct. 20th when he met with students in our electro-technologies lab discussing how their projects were progressing.   Designers of a scaled down version of the International Space Station were incredibly fortunate to consult with our mentor Dr. Thirsk, who holds the record for the Canadian astronaut who has spent the most days in space!

Other projects highlighted included  vex robots, 3D printing designs, a custom designed and built desktop arcade style game, and our Bob Bot – our developing school robot that has working arms and hands.  Current students are working on creating a fully functional and controllable head. We are looking forward to seeing Bob Bot in action!

Contributed by RTHS student Kathryn P., who attended the event:

On Thursday, October 15th, a group of nine Robert Thirsk Students and gym teacher, Ms. Andries, eagerly headed off first thing in the morning to attend the Horizon Leadership Conference, hosted at Henry Wise wood High School. The event began with an inspirational and entertaining speech by Blake Fly, who also attended the Robert Thirsk assembly we had in early September. To follow, another guest speaker, Dave Conlon, discussed the importance of thankfulness and school spirit in your local community. After the memorable presentations, all of the students who were present enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch in the school’s courtyard, along with a variety of team building games. The event was fun for all the students who went, as it was an important realization about the elements of what we should include at our Horizon Leadership conference that Thirsk is hosting March 2nd, and what things we should change at our event.  The Robert Thirsk students headed safely back on the school bu as they discussed topics such as optimism, school spirit, and leadership, and what a wonderful experience the conference was.

Grade 12 Comet Olympics Blast Off

Story by Zi Lin Q, grade 12

In February Robert Thirsk High School kicked off our second annual Thirsk Olympics with the grade 12 students. Classes engage in friendly competitions where students can demonstrate their skills, wit and coordination in different sets of games and events to earn points for their perspective homerooms. Every competitions acts as a way of relieving stress, but also as a socializing experience for Connect classes to bond by working together. The events are also just loads of fun, playing against or with friends to score points and obtaining bragging rights! The Connect with the highest points in the end wins a prize including the highly coveted Rockstar Parking at the front of the school. Connect classes can be awarded points through attendance, so grade 12’s should come out and support their class every Friday.

Every game allows the Comets to show off their wide variety of talents and achieve personal records. Students test their knowledge in an “Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?” style of game where the classes have are asked a series of trivia questions. If that’s not their forte, then dodge-ball is where their strengths may lie, Comets are able to present their strength, agility and precision, just remember to duck. Race and play against time in “Minute To Win It”, combining knowledge with agility to race against other classes in sets of mini games. Other events include a fishing derby off of the Upper Learning Commons, a “Heads Up” trivia game with iPhones, twisting it up with “Twister”, demonstrating artistry with “Pictionary”, and a catapulting game of “Angry Birds”.

The lucky winning class will be announced later this spring -stay tuned for the results, and remember, in the end everyone is Cometastic!
